Potterne building on House foundations The House brothers. From left: Wayne, Ben, Steven and Dean AFTER years in the footballing wilderness, this season could be the one that finally puts Potterne back on the football map. Potterne, who joined the league for the start of the 2002/03 season, have slowly crept up through the divisions and are now in the First Division, where they have enjoyed their football since the 2005/06 season. In the close season Potterne appointed youngsters Peter Huntley and Lee Saunders as their management team and the duo have impressed to a point where Potterne are currently enjoying their best ever start to a campaign, which has seen them top the Division One table and progress to the second round of both the WG Parr Trophy and the Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup. In the five years since Potterne joined the league they have never actually won any silverware as they have always been one of those sides who have climbed the league pyramid by being pushed up from outside of an automatic promotion spot. But all that could be about to change. A new crop of youngsters have started to appear over the past few seasons, and now their hard work both on and off the field looks as if it might be rewarded. After a fifth place finish last term, things have improved spectacularly for the management pairing of Huntley and Saunders, and although many people will see the return of striker Myles Hickton as the main reason for the revival, others believe that it is the form of the House brothers. advertisementPotterne may be the first team in the history of the league to play four brothers in a match, which happened earlier this month and will no doubt occur in the future as all four brother look likely to play a big part for Potterne this season. The first of the House quartet to play for the club is 19-year-old Steve, who was 16 when he joined the team in 2004. He scored his first ever goal in April of that year against AC Soho and since then he has played every season and to date the midfielder has netted 13 more goals. Steve's twin brother Dean started playing in 2006 but until this season has featured in cameo roles only and has spent more times on the bench than he did playing. But with a new hunger for the game the attacking midfielder might at last get to score his first goal for the club. At 20, Ben is the eldest of the House brothers and although he has only hit the target once so far this term, he will be trying to better his haul of 11 goals from his midfield position last year in what was his first full season with the villagers. The youngest brother is 16-year-old Wayne who, even though he starting playing for the side last season, has been hailed as the one to watch for the future and his performances in defence have won plaudits from many of Potterne's opponents to date. The House family were raised in the village and continue to live in or just outside of it. Many other teams would like to be in the position that Huntley and Saunders are in - having four top class players from one family who live locally and who want to play football with their mates on a Sunday morning. The Potterne team also includes Jamie Bayes, Ben Giles, Doug Dickson, James Campbell, Joe Unsworth, Geoff Potter, Neil Marsh, Jez Wiltshire, Luke Chant, Nick Holmes and a few more players who all seem to get on well together which clearly shows in the quality of football that they have played so far this season. If they continue to carry on in this form then Potterne will be one of the sides who should occupy an automatic promotion place come next May.
